Accutane Side Effects

While Accutane is an effective acne medication, it also has some potential side effects that are serious as well as some common but not so serious side effects.

The more common Accutane side effects are:

Chapped dry lips - this effects 90% of those taking high doses of Accutane

Dry, itchy skin, dry nose, nosebleeds - 80%

Irritation of eyes and eyelids - 40%

Many of these side effects are the direct result of the drying effect that Accutane has on oil glands.

There are other minor irritations that effect smaller percentages of those taking this medication and others that are, while fewer, far more severe. Unfortunately, you can’t really tell without adjusting dosages what will work most effectively for each individual case.

Regular blood tests are ordered during treatment with Accutane in order to rule out the occurrence of some of the more serious side effects.

The serious side effects of Accutane include:

  • Severe headaches caused by increased pressure in the brain (increased intracranail pressure).
  • Depression and mood changes
  • Hearing and vision problems.
  • Pain in muscles and joints.
  • Liver inflammation.
  • Birth Defects

Taking Accutane while pregnant can result in devastating birth defects.

It is vitally important, if you are taking this drug, to take extra precautions to make certain the conception during this time is not an option for you. You also need to take special care that this drug won’t interact with your current birth control.

There are certain kinds of birth controls that Accutane interacts with. You also need to make sure that you are utilizing a secondary form of birth control in addition to your birth control pills as no one form of birth control is one hundred percent effective at all times.
